The Speaker, Taraba State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Joseph Albasu Kunini PhD, has advocated that castration will be a better way of stemming the tide of rape cases in the state. He said this would serve as a lasting solution to the rampant cases of rape in the country.

According to the lawmaker, this has become imperative because despite the stiffer punishment such as life imprisonment for rapists, rape has assumed an alarming and dangerous proportion thereby becoming a national malady.

Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, made a startling revelation recently that a total of 717 rape cases had been reported in police stations across the country between January and May this year.

While speaking at the weekend in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, during a symposium, with a theme: "Ways of Tackling the Pandemic of Violence in the Society," organized by Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba, the Speaker promised he would not hesitate to sponsore a bill that would prescribe castration of rapists as final solution to the menace in the society.

He said, "recall that recently I had a cause to address the Press on the rising cases of rape and child abuse in the country, where I vowed to make strict legislation against the perpetrators of social vices; I expressed utter dismay at the rate of rape, domestic violence and child abuse, where I called for serious action from all and sundry.

"Therefore, permit me to use this opportunity to stress that the Taraba State House of Assembly, which I'm privileged to be the superintendent, is willing to enact or pass into law any bill that will curb the prevalence of violent crimes in our dear State."

The Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba, the pet project of Taraba First Lady, Barr Anna Darius Dickson Ishaku, has organized the symposium during which various papers were presented by security agencies and resource persons from both national and international organizations.

The objective of the symposium was to create awareness on the sharp increase of different forms violent crimes in the society, with it's attendant consequences and to seek strategies of addressing the menace through getting involved, advocacy, capacity building, networking and collaboration.

Some of the papers presented at the symposium in include 'Trafficking In Persons' (TIP), 'Victim Support'; 'Challenge of Arrest and Prosecution of Offenders of GBV,' TIP, 'Child Abuse and Child Labour; 'The Role of the State Security Service in Tackling Violence; 'The Scourge of Gender Based Violence and Rape on the Victim and Society; 'The Role of NGOs in Tackling Violence, Rape, Abuse and Trafficking in the Society; 'Response of the Media to the pandemic of Violence in the Society, etc.

A communique was issued at the end of the symposium in which the Government Security Agencies, The Stakeholders, The Non Governmental Organizations were tasked to synergize and tackle the menace head-on.
